LifeGem

LifeGem is the worlds first company to synthesize memorial diamonds from the carbon of a deceased persons or pets cremated remains or hair. Founded in 2001 by two sets of brothers, Greg and Mike Herro and Dean and Russell VandenBiesen, the company debuted its first LifeGem diamond in 2002 and operates what it describes as the only advanced diamond production facility of its kind in the United States, currently based at 264 Howard Avenue in Des Plaines, Illinois, having previously operated from nearby Elk Grove Village. LifeGem uses a patented purification and graphitization process to extract carbon from cremated remains or a lock of hair, converts it to graphite, then grows a diamond under extreme heat and pressure using HPHT synthesis, delivering a certified, GIA-referenced stone alongside any remaining ashes. The company sells both directly to families and through a network of roughly 3,500 independent U.S. funeral home partners, and has expanded internationally through LifeGem Europe. It has also built novelty side projects, including a diamond synthesized from Beethovens hair and diamonds made from Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning and M&M candy.
