Y Combinator is the original startup accelerator, running a twice-yearly program that funds and mentors early-stage companies through an intensive three-month batch culminating in Demo Day. Founded in 2005 by Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, Robert Tappan Morris, and Trevor Blackwell, YC has funded more than 5,000 companies including Airbnb, Stripe, Coinbase, DoorDash, Instacart, Reddit, and Twitch, and has funded 90-plus companies now worth a billion dollars or more. Since Garry Tan became President and CEO in January 2023, YC has narrowed its late-stage investing, shrunk batch sizes, and relocated its headquarters from Mountain View to the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco to sit closer to the city's concentration of AI labs and talent.
