Baukunst is a San Francisco-based venture capital firm and self-described collective of creative technologists that leads pre-seed investments in companies at the frontiers of technology and design. Founded in 2021 by Axel Bichara, Kate McAndrew, Matt Thoms, and Tyler Mincey, formerly the investment team at Bolt, the firm closed a $100 million inaugural fund in 2022 and typically leads or fully invests entire pre-seed rounds itself, writing initial checks in the roughly half a million to two million dollar range. Baukunst focuses on physical-digital, design-heavy, and hardtech companies including industrial manufacturing, robotics, materials science, consumer hardware, and AI-enabled tooling, sectors it argues are underserved by software-first funds. Beyond capital, the firm supports founders through co-founder matching, recruiting, and a network of operator-experts it calls its Creative Technologist Council. The partnership collectively has shipped more than fifty first-generation technology products, including the first iPhone, and has been the first-check lead investor in more than seventy technology companies.
