Integran Technologies: Inside the Nanocrystalline Metals Pioneer
A straightforward look at the Mississauga-based nanocrystalline metals company: its origins in nuclear-repair research, its Nanovate technology platform, its licensing-based business model, and its defense and aerospace credentials.

Integran Technologies is a Mississauga, Ontario-based materials science company that develops and licenses electrodeposited nanocrystalline metals under its Nanovate brand. Founded in 1999 out of research conducted at Ontario Hydro, the University of Toronto, and Queen's University, the company has spent more than two decades supplying nanostructured metal coatings and components to aerospace, defense, nuclear, and industrial customers, while running a headcount, by outside estimates, of roughly 19 people.
Origins in Nuclear Repair
Integran's roots trace to the 1980s, when Dr. Gino Palumbo pursued doctoral studies in metallurgical engineering at the University of Toronto alongside Professors Uwe Erb and Karl Aust, working on ways to improve material performance by manipulating internal grain structure at the nanoscale. Palumbo completed his PhD in 1989 and took the research to Ontario Hydro, the provincial utility then responsible for Canada's nuclear generating stations, where his team needed a way to remotely repair localized corrosion in steam generator tubing at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.
The result was the Electrosleeve process: electroplating a nanocrystalline nickel sleeve directly onto degraded tubing to restore its pressure boundary without a full tube replacement. Used at Pickering unit 5 between 1992 and 1994, Electrosleeve is widely described as one of the first large-scale industrial applications of nanostructured materials anywhere in the world, developed before "nanotechnology" was common terminology outside materials science circles. The underlying patent, US 5,352,266, is among the earliest issued US patents in the nanotechnology field.
Nanometals Corp. was founded in the early 1990s as a partnership that included Ontario Hydro, developing the commercial applications of this research. In 1999, Nanometals Corp., Ontario Hydro, and Babcock & Wilcox merged their respective intellectual property to launch Integran Technologies as a combined entity, with Ontario Power Generation and Babcock & Wilcox as major shareholders. In 2002, Integran received financial backing from Mosaic Capital Partners and became an independent firm; in 2004, the company was restructured through a management employee buyout. Palumbo has served as President and CEO throughout.
The Nanovate Technology Platform
Integran's core technology, marketed as Nanovate, is a family of electrodeposited (plated) nanocrystalline metals built primarily around nickel, iron, cobalt, and copper alloys. By controlling grain size at the nanometer scale during electroplating, the company produces metal coatings and structural layers that it describes as lighter, stronger, harder, and cheaper than aluminum, along with improved corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and shielding against low-frequency magnetic interference. The company organizes the platform into five named product lines, each targeting a different performance requirement:
- Nanovate NV (also called Nanovar): a low thermal expansion, high-hardness coating suited to carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite tooling, improving wear and fatigue resistance and tooling life.
- Nanovate CR: an electrodeposited nanocrystalline cobalt-phosphorus alloy developed with funding from US and Canadian defense partners as a direct replacement for hard chrome plating, which relies on hexavalent chromium, a known environmental and health hazard. Current applications include aircraft landing gear, hydraulic actuators, and gas turbine engines.
- Nanovate NS: an erosion-resistant coating that protects composite and metal parts from rain and sand erosion, applied selectively to aerospace and industrial components.
- Nanovate NP: structural plating on plastics, combining nanocrystalline metal coatings with injection-molded polymers such as ABS, nylon, PEEK, and additive-manufacturing materials, producing parts the company says are lighter and stronger than aluminum equivalents.
- Nanovate EM: a magnetic shielding coating with soft magnetic properties, engineered to avoid the shock-drop and strain sensitivity that affects traditional large-grain shielding materials.
Around this platform, Integran groups its capabilities into six broader categories: corrosion and wear protection, plating on plastics, low coefficient-of-thermal-expansion coatings, electromagnetic shield coating, grain boundary engineering, and custom alloy development. The company also offers plating-on-plastics services directly, and operates a related consumer-facing brand, PowerMetal, for some of its sporting goods applications.
Business Model: Licensing Over Manufacturing Scale
Integran describes its own business model, in its LinkedIn profile, as "a proven track record in R&D, Prototyping, Small Volume Production and Licensing," serving Global 500 companies in aerospace, defense, biomedical, and heavy industries. Rather than scaling up manufacturing capacity to produce finished components at volume, Integran typically licenses its coating and alloy processes to manufacturers who already have production infrastructure in place, and supports customers in developing their own product and process IP within their specific business areas.
This model shows up clearly in the company's sporting goods work, which Palumbo pushed into starting around 2004 as a way to generate revenue on a faster cycle than aerospace and defense programs typically allow. Nanovate-coated True Temper Epic golf shafts, featuring a nano-nickel alloy outer layer bonded to a high-modulus carbon fiber core, became notable when professional golfer Trevor Immelman used one to win the 2008 Masters. The same coating approach was licensed into COLT Hockey composite sticks, where a thin Nanovate NiCo reinforcement layer roughly tripled stick strength by preventing micro-fracturing in the base composite; into Anderson NanoTek softball bats, which combine Nanovate with the Hall-Petch strengthening effect; into Union snowboard bindings under a process the company calls MetaFuse; and into a steering tube/fork assembly used by Cervélo Cycles for Tour de France-level bicycles. In each case, Integran supplied the coating technology and licensing arrangement rather than the finished product.
Defense, Aerospace, and Government Relationships
Integran's aerospace and defense work sits alongside its consumer licensing business. The company holds AS9100D and ISO 9001 quality certification, the standard required of aerospace and defense supply chain manufacturers, and is registered in Canada's Controlled Goods Program, the domestic industrial security regime governing goods and technical data with military or national security significance. It also participates in the Joint Certification Program under the US-Canada Militarily Critical Technical Data Agreement, which allows Canadian contractors to access export-controlled US Department of Defense technical data on comparable terms to US contractors.
Its government-facing work includes past research contracts with the US Air Force and NASA on jet engine component applications, a 2015 Canadian Space Agency award to develop a nanomaterial competitive with aluminum on strength and stiffness, and use of Canada's Innovative Solutions Canada Program and Sustainable Development Technology Canada funding mechanisms. In 2022, Integran entered a research license agreement with the National Research Council of Canada covering carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube technology, aimed at nanocomposite fabrics for aerospace and defense components requiring impact resistance, flame resistance, and electromagnetic shielding.
Leadership and Organization
Palumbo remains President and CEO. Dr. Jon McCrea, VP of Research & Development, has led R&D initiatives at the company for more than a decade. Nancy Lavignasse, Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, has been with Integran since its founding and has overseen its financial and administrative operations for nearly two decades. Dr. Klaus Tomantschger, VP of Intellectual Property & Licensing, manages what the company describes as North America's largest patent portfolio in metallurgical nanotechnology, connecting the R&D pipeline to commercial licensing. The remaining team spans operations, quality assurance, manufacturing, process engineering, and administration.
Integran's headcount has shrunk considerably over its history. Palumbo told The Globe and Mail in 2009 that the company employed 55 people at the time, already a small figure relative to its technology development activity. Third-party estimates put the current headcount at roughly 19, suggesting the company has become leaner rather than growing over the past decade and a half, even as its patent estate, close to 400 filings since 1999, has continued to expand.
Recognition and Market Position
Integran was named Innovative Business of the Year by the Royal Bank of Canada at the 2007 Canadian Innovation Awards. Crunchbase lists Umicore, Atotech, and Bodycote as its closest competitors or alternatives, all considerably larger, publicly traded surface-treatment and specialty-materials companies. Integran's positioning is narrower and more specialized: rather than competing on manufacturing scale or breadth of coating services, it competes on the depth of its nanocrystalline metals IP and its willingness to license that IP into a wide range of unrelated end markets, from nuclear tubing to Tour de France bicycles to fighter jet landing gear.
Reliable, independently verified revenue figures for Integran are not publicly available; the company's own materials and third-party data sources report no consistent annual sales figure, and Integran has not raised financing that would typically require disclosure of its financials. What is publicly documented is a company that has operated continuously since 1999, expanded its patent estate every year, retained the same CEO throughout, and built out a compliance and quality infrastructure, security clearances, aerospace certifications, and export-control registrations, more commonly associated with far larger defense and aerospace suppliers.
